The balcony is a rare perk around here, and it looks out over the busy street, which is nice for sitting with a coffee. The hotel is on the second floor, with a lift from the first. It’s right in the middle of Bukit Bintang. The receptionists are polite and ready to help, and there’s a money exchange just below the hotel.

I’ve traveled to a lot of countries, but didn’t expect such a bad experience back home. It was really hard to find because the place is called Goldbrick Hotel, not Zen. The old lift and dark staircase didn’t feel safe to me, and there were a lot of foreign workers around who seemed to be there illegally. I felt like I could get mugged at any moment.

At check-in I was sent to another hostel after being told there was no room for me. The place is actually called Brick Hotel, which makes me think this may be a scam to get customers in and then turn them away. A few other couples were in the same situation. I wouldn’t trust a Zen Rooms booking.

Finding the place was the biggest problem. On Bukit Pintang road, Zen Room Basic is actually called Golden Brick hotel, and even locals didn’t know where Zen Room Basic was. The room itself was small, but I don’t mind that if it’s clean.

The room was really tiny and the place didn’t feel cozy. At least it was clean and the AC was good.
