East Indies Mansion

A small hotel with nice design, a great location, and great staff. Room setups vary, so check yours first. In the less-than-ideal bathroom, the wall-mounted electric shower has a fixed head that sprays water over the sink and partly over the toilet, leaving the whole floor soaked. The small split AC in our first room was struggling to cool it, so it may be best to check and test the room.

Loke greeted us when we arrived and handled check-in so politely and helpfully. We loved our stay at East Indies Mansion, a beautiful, relaxing sanctuary in the middle of George Town. We booked Anistar 1, a peaceful, tastefully decorated room. There’s a large step down to the bathroom, so it isn’t very accessible. The manager, whose name I didn’t get, was lovely, as was the maid who checked us out. The house was very clean, and there were thoughtful little touches that made it feel like they really care about guests having a good stay. We’d highly recommend it and would like to return. The building’s history and character come through as soon as you walk into East Indies Mansion. Every corner is thoughtfully decorated, and the interior has so much charm that it’s a pleasure just to wander around and notice the details. The staff made the stay memorable. Everyone was warm, attentive, and genuinely caring, giving the place a welcoming, homely feel. We felt relaxed and looked after throughout, and it was clear they put real care into making guests comfortable. We’d happily stay here again.

Breakfast had an interesting set menu each morning, though the choices were limited. The coffee was a letdown, just weak bag coffee. There’s no kettle or fridge in the rooms, but you can use the shared area for tea, coffee, limited snacks, and the fridge. I loved this original Penang mansion, with its tasteful interiors, books, and objets d'arts. The beds were super comfortable, the staff delightful, and the house was a quiet escape from the busy neighbourhood. It’s very well located for Little Indoa, Amenian, and Chulia streets. My only other gripes were the dim lighting and lack of natural light in the Nutmeg room.
