The location put us right in the middle of a lively, beautiful neighbourhood, and our room had lovely wooden paneling. The house itself is full of charm and character. Emily (I think the manager's name?) was so sweet and friendly. In the Dining room, complimentary char keow teow, nasi lemak, banana cake, and other Georgetown delicacies were available around the clock. They were delicious, on par with the restaurants in town. This was probably my favourite hotel stay ever, with the warmth, real human interaction, and character I wish life had more of. If you’re a light sleeper, bring earplugs. The morning prayers down the street were quite audible from our room, but only lasted 10 minutes, and we got back to sleep afterward.

I’ve just returned to the US from Penang, and I had such a great experience at this hotel. I highly recommend it to my friends, a couple from England who escape the cold to enjoy Malaysia’s warmth, people, and weather. I’ll post a video talking with the owner, a retiree from government work.
The room was a little older, but comfortable, and being near lots of bars suited us since that’s why we were there. The hotel is lovely and quaint, and the service was amazing. We hadn’t expected free breakfast, so that was a really nice surprise. The receptionist who greeted us was lovely too. I’m just bummed I didn’t get her name.
The rooms were roomy and clean, and the women looking after the place were genuinely kind and helpful. I wasn't impressed with the breakfasts, though. What makes this stay memorable is the historic architecture, the lovely wooden interiors and the courtyard. It feels like one of Malaysia's most authentic places to stay, even if comfort and fancy touches aren't really its strength.
We'd happily come back. It's a clean, comfortable historic hotel with a warm, family feel, and the staff were kind and helpful. Breakfast was a welcome extra.
