Austin Heights Golf and Hotel Resort

We came for the golf, not the hotel, so this is about the course. We visited on 10 June 2024 and liked playing here. Some fairways are narrow, which makes them tricky, but they’re good for practicing straighter shots. The caddies were solid, quick to pick up our distances, and confident handing us the right clubs. The greens were being aerated, as shown in my photos. Play can drag when guests assume they don’t need caddies. It was very quiet the day we went, though, so the pace was still bearable. After the shower we were left sweating because the changing-room AC wasn’t on, presumably to save costs. The changing room itself was good. The entrance and interior were a letdown, very bare and almost like a ghost town. Still, it was a nice change from our usual place at Ponderosa, and there are good food options close by. We’ll definitely be back.

The clubhouse and facilities are just as shabby as the course, which is in awful condition, badly maintained, and hazardous for golfers. My experience here was terrible. The buggies are especially concerning: ours had faulty parking brakes and rolled into a pond, damaging our belongings and equipment. The country club acknowledged the brake failure but won’t take responsibility for the insurance claims. Austin Height is the worst golf course I’ve ever played. I wouldn’t recommend it and would avoid it. There are plenty of other JB courses that are safer and offer a better experience for similar or lower prices.

Narrow fairways and an undulating layout give this course plenty of character and make it a lot of fun. It’s beautiful and well maintained, with slick, crisp greens and scenery that feels like you’re playing overseas. Probably JB’s most underrated course.

We played with friends over the weekend in two flights. The price was okay, and it was fun, even though the course was a challenge. The back nine in particular has narrow fairways, ups and downs, and uneven greens. Not an easy round.
