I didn’t feel comfortable from the moment I arrived, and I knew I wouldn’t sleep there that night. One man behind the counter gave me a look as if he wondered what I was up to. I’d booked and paid online in July 2022, but the first thing the man at the counter, which looked like a pawn shop, told me was “full.” After I showed the email confirmation, he got out a book and wrote down my details, as if the earlier booking didn’t exist. Then he gave me a room, despite having just said they were full. It looked unclean, the bathroom was wet as though someone had just bathed, and there was no window despite my booking saying street view. I suspected it wasn’t my reserved room and might be a spare for staff or a last-minute couple wanting a quick romp. I only realized at the pawn shop counter that it was an hourly hotel, with stays starting at two hours. I checked out within a minute. Later I realized Agoda never published my review. Relying on those reviews was another mistake: they were unbelievably favorable, mostly “very good,” with “excellent” and “best ever budget hotel,” and no details.
