Kak Yah and her family made us feel genuinely welcome, with such warm, friendly hosting. The place is full of unexpected things to discover, combining practical eco-friendly technology with traditional sustainable methods. A real hidden gem.
Bring insect repellent and book early for holidays, since busy periods fill up quickly. The feel is rustic rather than luxurious, and it’s cash only, though the hospitality more than makes up for that. It has received ASEAN Green Hotel Standard, Community-Based Tourism, and Booking.com guest awards. Staying here has a real community feel, with self-serve breakfast and a shared gotong-royong spirit. Birds, rabbits, monkeys, and buzzing bees are all around, and over 40 bird species, butterflies, and stingless bees live in the lush riverside setting, just 6 km from Kota Bharu. The firefly trip is a highlight. Watching them flash together is magical, especially on a clear night around the new moon. Other things to try include kayaking, archery, firefly tours, cooking lessons, the petting zoo, bee-harvesting, aquaponic gardens, river bathing, and clam digging. There are air-conditioned rooms in several sizes: Sagu sleeps 4 for RM100, Nibong sleeps 6 for RM150, and Pinang sleeps 11 for RM200. The dorm is RM15 per person. Groups can use the equipped multipurpose hall, which holds around 80-100 and has a PA system, karaoke, and Wi-Fi. It costs RM500 per day and works well for events or team-building. Meals are served in a rustic dining area and restaurant. The traditional organic lunch sets can include patin cooked in buluh, ayam kampung, ulam, homemade budu, and fresh herbal drinks. Mee Celup Bangkok is a favorite, just RM5 a bowl, hot and full of flavor.
We stopped by the bee farm, where a kind kakak showed us the different stingless bees and let us try honey from one type called 'kelulut'. We even tasted it straight from the nest. They don't attack and are harmless, so we didn't need the safety head net, though nets are available if you're nervous. It's very kid friendly, and the employees were so friendly and welcoming. A memorable visit and a good way to learn about stingless bees.
A lovely spot to get close to nature and try activities like kayaking, archery, and firefly watching. They make their own compost for the plants, too. Just know you need to wash your own dishes after using them.
The room was spacious, but I expected it to be cleaner, and the cafe right in front of it needs attention. Bird droppings covered a large part of the cafe canopy. A little might be understandable as part of the natural setting, but that much is hard to overlook at a place to eat.
