The breakfast buffet was excellent, with an impressive range of food and drinks, and that's why I'm giving the stay two stars. I also appreciated that staff were genuinely apologetic. Still, hearing again and again that the hotel was busy because of high occupancy and the long weekend got frustrating. I've stayed elsewhere over long weekends and had a much better experience. Management needs to do better. For a place marketed as a luxury five-star hotel, this felt like a one-star stay. I was in KL for four days and three nights, and spent just one night here, from 31 May to 1 June. I chose Grand Hyatt for my final night, hoping to end the holiday on a high after staying at another five-star hotel. I expected more because of Hyatt's reputation for luxury. We drove up from Singapore and entered via the car park lift. On the ground floor, there was nobody to guide us or explain that check-in was at the Sky Lobby, even though we had a baby, bags, and a stroller. The interior looked dated, with no signature scent like I'd come to expect at luxury hotels. I gave the ground floor the benefit of the doubt, since it wasn't the check-in lobby. We left our bags with the concierge and went up to the lobby, where a long check-in queue was waiting. We arrived after 5pm. My husband queued while I sat with the baby, and I noticed that nobody was clearing the tables. There was no signature scent there either, and the first impression didn't feel luxurious. After a while, he was told our room would take another hour. Several others in the queue seemed to be in the same situation. Having to wait for a room after 5pm felt like a major red flag. They offered us an “upgrade” to a garden-view room and RM200 in hotel credit for the delay. We'd planned to have dinner at KLCC, but felt we had to use the credit. The in-room dining wasn't great either. After an hour, we asked reception if the room was ready. It took a while for the staff member to check, but she noticed we had a baby and kindly took us to the lounge while she looked into it. We waited there about 15 minutes. She then said a room was available and our key card would be ready in five minutes. She got everything arranged as promised. I didn't catch her name, but I really appreciate her help. We got the key card around 6:30pm or a little later, though I can't remember exactly. The corner room looked partly onto the garden and partly over the city. By then, it already felt like the end of my holiday had been ruined. Inside, the room was very outdated. The curtains were untidy, there were white specks of dust around, the glass walls were stained, and the dusty-looking cushions had loose threads. The kettle and coffee machine were dusty too. It felt like a spare room rather than a premium one, though at least it wasn't haunted. Honestly, I felt embarrassed for the hotel given the standards it showed. This was a disappointing experience for a hotel presented as a luxury five-star property.

The wedding and reception of a close friend took place here, and I helped lead the event management. The hotel's layout and atmosphere suited both the social and formal parts of the occasion, and everything flowed naturally. Its rooms are comfortable and luxurious, though a little more traditional in style than newer hotels. To me, it sits between the familiarity of Mandarin Oriental Kuala Lumpur and the sharper modern style of Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. The top-floor lobby has always made a strong impression on me, especially with the dining areas and the views. The food is consistently good, and the skyline makes it a setting I look forward to returning to. Even the main foyer makes an impact, with its grand staircase setting the mood as soon as you arrive. 👉 I share more about living in and investing in Kuala Lumpur on my YouTube channel.

The breakfast was our favorite part, especially the nasi lemak, roti canai, curry, idli, sambar, and kombucha. We also enjoyed lounge access, the great pool views, and the sauna. The ladies' jacuzzi was so loud that conversation was difficult, though, and could use an upgrade. Everyone we met, from the front desk and lounge to housekeeping, was very nice. The location worked well, and our visitors loved taking pictures with the twin towers. We had three rooms on the 28th floor for four nights to celebrate my mom's birthday. Staff decorated one room as a surprise, which was a lovely touch. The rooms were all set up the same way. Although I requested three adults per room, they only added a roller bed, so we ended up booking three rooms. All six of us found the mattresses poor. I slept on the chaise instead, which was more comfortable. The rooms seemed better suited to couples or honeymooners, and the lack of sound insulation between the bathroom and the living area meant you could hear everything.

Breakfast was a real hassle. Every morning there were long queues just to get seated, usually 30 minutes or more, and on our last day staff said the wait could be over an hour. I had accepted the breakfast upsell after booking three nights room-only, so that wait felt questionable. There didn't seem to be extra seating opened or any effort to manage the overflow, which didn't meet my expectations of a five-star hotel. A large group seemed to have several rooms near mine. They kept moving between rooms late at night with their door latches open, so doors slammed repeatedly until 3am. It was exhausting, and room assignments should take groups into account to avoid disturbing other guests. The room itself was lovely and spacious, especially the walk-in closet. My city view was pleasant, though I couldn't see the Twin Towers. I liked having the toilet, shower, and bathtub in separate spaces, and the amenities, outlets, and general layout were well thought out. My main in-room complaint was that the TV couldn't cast from personal devices. The pool isn't big, but has a nice resort feel. I also had a full-body massage at the clean, beautiful spa, and the treatment was decent. The building's layout is unusual: reception is on the top floor, while guest rooms, pool, gym, and spa are below. Rather than a standard counter, the front desk is arranged around several large communal tables, giving it a modern, slightly residential feel. The hotel is around 10 minutes by taxi from KL Sentral, between Pavilion, Donki, and Isetan on one side and the Petronas Twin Towers on the other, both within walking distance. It's also next to the convention expo area, which is handy. The room and location were genuinely excellent, and I'd consider staying again if the operational issues improve.
