The room setup was bare, with just a bed in each room and no tables or chairs. There was one socket per room, and only one room had a hairdryer, an iron, and a worn ironing board that we ended up using as a table. Basic items like cups and spoons were missing too. The place also had a strong mouldy smell, including from the fridge, and the toilet had bugs and mould. The mosquito net had holes, and water pressure was almost nonexistent. The pump outside made a loud noise whenever it ran, while the heater only warmed the water if we reduced the flow further. The walls barely blocked sound, so we heard everything inside as well as trucks and barking dogs outside. The Wi-Fi didn't work. The cleaner said the service provider was having an outage, which made sense, but the owner hadn't warned us and never replied when I messaged about the other problems. The unit is in a badly deteriorated state and needs an upgrade. The view of Mount Kinabalu was the sole bright spot, though clouds covered most of it during our visit, making the stay even harder to bear.

We had a lovely view of Mount Kinabalu from both the balcony and the room windows, and the balcony was spacious enough for a gathering. The kitchen was fully equipped, with separate utensils for halal and non-halal cooking. The host or caretaker was warm and accommodating. It's a little out of the way, which worked well for privacy.

The mountain view from the balcony was the one consolation. The shower heater was unreliable, and there was no microwave for reheating food in a place that is naturally cold. Those two things were major drawbacks.

It isn't a five-star hotel, but the view is worth ten stars. The housekeeper or owner was kind, and the house is away from the busy streets. Lush vegetable farms are just a short walk away; nearby farmers were friendly and let us wander around and even offered us vegetables to take home.

The road needs attention, with plenty of potholes, and the homestay turned out to be farther away than we expected from checking the map. Still, the place felt safe and the utilities were in good condition. What really made it memorable was the astonishing, almost magical view of Mount Kinabalu. A one-of-a-kind stay, and otherwise everything was great and acceptable.
