We saw squirrels, birds, and even a few hornbills around the place. The staff were so kind and helpful, especially Bibi, who deserves a shoutout. There’s a free shuttle to the Orangutan center, and they can arrange the Rainforest Discovery Center night walk and transport, plus rides to other cities. They booked us a very comfortable bus to Semporna for 55 ringgit. We’d like to come back someday, and we heard they’re building another place in Semporna, which we’d love to try too. The hotel sits high enough that flooding on the road below after heavy rain didn’t affect us. There was also an electrical storm, loud and a little scary. Expect plenty of bugs, though we didn’t mind since they fit the atmosphere. The food was nice, if not especially memorable. I’d go for the veggie curry with added chicken, and the fried noodles were good as well. Breakfast was okay but small. Our favorite was the roti, which changes every two days. Our one issue was the room’s cleanliness. With the open door concept, keeping things tidy must be difficult, but there was quite a lot of dust in spots that seemed not to have been cleaned for a while. Dirt also fell from the roof onto our bed, so those areas need more frequent cleaning. At 200 USD for three nights, we’d expected a more polished room. Even so, this was one of the nicest places I’ve stayed.

Hammocks, hornbills to look out for, and a good night’s sleep. It’s a peaceful place surrounded by nature, about 20-30 minutes from the city, with a shuttle to nearby nature activities. The staff were lovely and helpful, and the included breakfast and other meals on site were simple but tasty. Thanks for a restful break from the noise. I’ll recommend it.

The staff made this stay for me. I felt welcome as soon as Mael picked me up, and he’s such a kind, skilled driver. Receptionists Andi and Shila were lovely too. Shila was especially accommodating, kept me company as a solo traveler, and shared a little about life in Sepilok. Paganakan Dii is lucky to have them. I spent two nights here while backpacking on a budget. The rooms have a rustic feel that makes you feel close to nature, and the food was amazing, especially the vege curry 😍! It’s a bit out of the way, but there’s a free shuttle at set times during the day. A paid ride is also available for the night walk at the RDC. Don’t miss it, it was my Sepilok highlight. There’s no A/C in the dorms, though the rainforest cools things off at night. The amenities aren’t 5*, and they make that clear. Highly recommend!

We picked this retreat for one night because it’s a little away from the main tourist spots like the Orangutan Centre, and were glad we did. It’s a quiet, green setting with a simple, rustic feel. Our premium double room had air conditioning and a private bathroom. It was cool enough at night to sleep with the fan and door open. When it rained, the sound of rain and insects was lovely. The shared area felt cozy for dinner and evening conversation. Staff communication was great, and Cilly kindly sorted tickets and transport for the night walk at RDC, which often books up. Breakfast comes with the stay, but it’s just two slices of kaya toast and a boiled egg, so may not be enough before an active morning. Lunch and dinner were better sized, with good flavor and solid options before or after an activity. A charming choice if you like peaceful surroundings and a stay close to nature.

As a woman traveling alone, I felt safe, comfortable, and well looked after. The people working here are incredibly kind and helpful. My room was clean and lovely, with hot water and air conditioning, and the views are amazing. I liked it so much that I came back after being unhappy with another place. There’s free transport to the orangutans and rainforest, and they’ll help organise activities too. The food is tasty and inexpensive. A wonderful hostel, I really recommend it.
