Guesthouse Hotel Malaya

Malaya Hotel, Taiping has a convenient location near attractions and plenty of places to eat, and the price is cheap. But the room was dusty, and mites made it very uncomfortable to sleep. The towels were stained and smelled bad, and a strong sewage-like odor built up in the bathroom when the door was closed. The air conditioning worked, but I had to leave the windows open most of the time to cut down the smell. Hygiene needs serious improvement before this can feel like a comfortable place to stay.

A big, clean room with good AC, and great value for the price. The owner was super friendly, gave us plenty of water, and even provided an extra-thick chain so we could lock our bikes inside his downstairs area.

I keep coming back here and it never disappoints.

For RM 62 booked online, my standard double room had the basics, towels, cups, soap and Wi-Fi, and everything still worked despite the place feeling old and dingy. The bathroom was tolerable, though not in great shape, and getting the water heater to the right setting took trial and error. The air conditioner, windows, heater and TV all felt dated. There were basic channels, with Astro movies like HBO and Cinemax available through the main lobby television connection. One warning, the channel changes depending on what the receptionist is watching. The location is strategic, and it might appeal if you want a stay that feels like the old days.
