The staff were very friendly and helpful, and the place was clean. But the two rooms we paid extra for as “luxury” were nowhere near worth the price, especially compared with better, cheaper places along the route. There were lots of cockroaches in the supposed best room. In another, the toilet wouldn’t flush and there was no bathroom light. The TV and decoder remotes needed a serious clean, and the thin toilet paper felt like sandpaper. One bed was right against the bedside lamp switch, so moving around made the headboard turn the light on and off. None of these problems was the worst I’ve ever seen, but these rooms definitely weren’t luxury.

I’m leaving at 04:17 after staying in room 8. The walls are so thin I could hear the guests in room 6 snoring, and people in room 7 banging doors and making a racket in the bathroom right beside my bed. It went on last night and started again around 04:00. I should’ve left before trying to sleep. For $N700 for one guest, you can find better. The curtains don’t cover the windows, the plug in my room didn’t work, and there was no Wi-Fi. If you want a proper night’s rest, find a nearby farm guest house.

The peaceful setting at Grunau Country Hotel made it easy to rest and recharge, whether you’re just passing through or staying longer. It’s clean and comfortable, with a personal feel. The owners are kind and down-to-earth, and you can tell they care about making guests feel at home. Their own children add to the family-friendly atmosphere. I was genuinely touched by the hospitality and good service, and would recommend it to anyone after a relaxed stay in the heart of the Karoo.

That cold beer was especially welcome after a long day of driving. We were on our way to South Africa and stayed at Grunau Country Hotel for one night. The staff were welcoming, the hotel was very clean, and we had a pleasant stop. We didn’t get to try the food, though the cleanliness left a good impression. The price felt a bit high for what was included, but it’s still a comfortable, friendly place for a stopover.
