Malabou Beach Hotel

The bungalows look fresh and are nicely decorated, and the staff were pleasant and clearly trying hard. I had a good first impression at check-in, though the language barrier meant I didn’t fully understand what amenities were available. When I booked by phone, I was quoted 18,000 XPF for two nights in a beachfront bungalow, which seemed like a great deal. At checkout, I was told the rate was 18,000 XPF per night. That was a shock, since I’d been told something different both on the phone and at check-in. The staff member apologized but wasn’t willing to discuss the price or waive even one meal or drink. I found that poor and the place completely overpriced. If you don’t speak French well, I’d especially suggest avoiding it, which is a shame given the place’s potential and the pride locals take in it. Once I looked past the price I’d expected, there were several problems. The room wasn’t clean: there was a dead lizard in the window frame, and hair and phlegm in the bathroom. The mini golf course was badly broken, the cracked kayaks took on water in a way that felt dangerous, and there were mismatched snorkels with only one mask for all the guests. There were no room guides or information in English or French. The bed used two king singles with different mattresses, one soft and one hard, and I couldn’t sleep comfortably, so I pulled one mattress onto the floor. I ate at the bar and restaurant regularly to support the place, despite the food being average. The duck meal gave me an upset stomach, and I was sick with vomiting and diarrhea. It’s hard to write such a negative review when the people are so lovely and trying so hard, but my stay wasn’t a positive one, especially after comparing it with another place.

It’s a windy spot, and there isn’t much nearby. The beach view bungalows are pretty cosy, and my room was nice, though a little small.

Lovely refurbished private cabins in an amazing, secluded spot. There are free kayaks and some lovely walks nearby.

Such a beautiful setting, with very friendly staff. Great for kids. Catherine was fabulously hospitable, and deserves a special thanks. Merci.
