I had a terrible experience with Hilda, who runs Hostal Leyendas. I felt she showed no respect for customers or professionalism. She told me through Airbnb that there was on-site parking for my motorcycle, but when I arrived, there wasn’t. The alternative was a dirty, non-private lot across the street. I messaged her about the problem, and although she had replied quickly while I was booking and paying, she read these messages and ignored them. I asked staff to call her too. They tried, but she didn’t answer. I waited in the hot hostel lobby in my motorcycle gear, sweating, while Hilda and her staff weren’t responding. With no suitable parking and feeling extremely hot, I eventually left. I thought I could sort it out later and that she would refund me given what had happened. After I’d gone, she wrote on Airbnb suggesting I could bring the bike inside the lobby. Staff had seen me leave, so she must have known I was already gone. I suspect she made that offer to improve how things looked on Airbnb. I expect she may say she offered me a place to park the motorcycle. She did offer the lobby, but only after I’d left, and I believe she knew that. Parking is vital to me because I currently live on my motorcycle, and I believe Hilda misrepresented what was available. I asked for a refund on that basis, but she refused and has returned none of the money for my two-night booking. Her refusal to refund me is irritating, but ignoring my messages while I sat there sweating was even more unprofessional and sneaky. I felt she left me with no real choice. Do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else.

The location worked well for me. It’s a bit away from the main tourist area, but still close enough that you don’t need a taxi to get into town. The facilities are basic and the rates affordable, much like other hostels in the area. There’s a good place downstairs and basic kitchen items for meals. I’m careful not to bring food into hostel rooms in a tropical climate. The air conditioning worked perfectly, but the shower’s pressure and temperature seemed suspicious. I’m usually too tired to care about shower quirks, but after volcano boarding I was muddy and exhausted, and even half an hour trying to work out the shower didn’t leave me feeling fresh. Breakfast had both typical Continental and traditional options, and was filling. They also sell water, juice, and basic toiletries like shampoo and razors, which was handy. Nights were peaceful because it’s away from the busy tourist area. On a weekend, though, I could hear music from nearby clubs until 2 or 3 am.

The women who run the hostel were genuinely kind and helpful, and breakfast was very good, one of the highlights of our few-night stay. But the room setup wasn’t practical: there was nowhere to put backpacks or clothes, so everything wound up on the floor. León is one of the hottest cities in Central America, and the nights were tough without AC. The fans weren’t enough, and guests have to pay extra to use the air conditioning. The bathroom was spacious, but there was no hot water. We had an 8am tour and relied on breakfast being ready at 7:30am. Staff arrived late, and the food didn’t come until 7:50, so we couldn’t finish it. We knew when booking that it was a bit far from the main square. Walking around León at night generally feels safe, but the area right around the hostel felt less comfortable after dark. The hosts and breakfast were good, but the heat, room layout, and small reliability issues affected our stay.

The place looked just like the photos when I arrived, with a few shared outdoor spots, a cozy kitchen, and little noise. That was the good part. My room was on the second floor, and with 36°C outside it was even hotter in there. The receptionist agreed it was hot. I was told air conditioning would cost $12USD a night, or $10 as a discount, while the room itself was just under $16 a night. Some rooms include air conditioning, but most don’t. I felt physically ill from the heat and had to leave. The filtered water station was empty, and I was told it wouldn’t be fixed until the night shift arrived. I’d been well hydrated before checking in, but after a few hours I needed medical help for heat stroke. I believe the room conditions caused it. I was shocked by the lack of concern for guest health and safety. I asked to pay for one night and cancel the other four, but they refused a refund, citing their no-refund policy. Their WhatsApp messages kept saying they were there to help, but I didn’t see any compassion unless it meant paying more. I could have understood things better if they’d shown even a little human decency instead of acting like a cash-hungry business. In their response they said I offended staff by refusing to pay extra. That isn’t true. I was polite to the receptionist, who doesn’t make the rules. They also claimed they offered a $6 rate, but I was told $10 was the lowest, already discounted from $12. I checked with booking.com too: it doesn’t clearly say the room is “fan only,” and those words don’t appear anywhere. Some rooms list air conditioning as a feature, but the descriptions don’t say “fan only.” Another couple checking in at the same time had a similar issue and also refused to stay. MAKE YOUR BOOKING HERE CAREFULLY.

The courtyards and patios are lovely, and it’s a very dog-friendly place. Staff are friendly and super helpful, and everywhere was clean and central. They keep making little improvements. The newest ones I saw were wooden lattice dividers around the cozy patios for more privacy, with gates to keep dogs or kids from wandering off. Check the updated photos. They even put up an inflatable kiddie pool on a very hot weekend. They’re always finding small ways to make guests comfortable. I might never leave! Lol. Honestly, it’s the nicest hostel I’ve stayed in, and I’d highly recommend it.
