Hostal La Chiponga

The people were really nice, and it was a good deal in a good location. But on one of our three nights, the owner's friend got drunk, yelled, and even offered to fight when I went out in my boxers to ask “todo bien?” It went on past midnight. After he passed out, his truck alarm still went off now and then just a few feet from my window. I’d told the owner I was getting up at 5 to hike the steep volcano, so I really wish he’d tried to deal with the drunk guy and the car alarm.

We had a wonderful two-night stay at La Chiponga. The owner and staff were lovely, and the food at the restaurant across the street, where a staff member took us, was delicious. We had two clean rooms, one with a kitchen and one without. When we asked about disinfecting them, a staff member happily got a coworker to clean both rooms and the bathroom. There was free Wi-Fi, but no hot water or breakfast. Be careful walking along the road and near bushes, as there are venomous snakes called “Serpiente de sangre.”

Really nice accommodation, and the owner was amazing and very friendly. He let us use the laundry machine for free, and even gave us a free ride to a restaurant during a storm. I’d happily stay here again.

The highlight of our three nights at La Chiponga was being greeted by Capuchin Monkeys every morning. I also loved unwinding in a hammock in the evenings and early mornings. The rooms are rustic and simple, but having a kitchen was useful, and the price felt excellent for what we got. The staff were friendly and helpful. The restaurant across the street was very good, with amazing food and lake views, plus attentive, accommodating service. La Chiponga was also close to Ojo De Agua and made a great base for exploring Ometepe Island. We really enjoyed staying there.
