Amsterdam Central Guest House

I read there were two rooms, but the stairs stopped us at the entrance. We had to turn around, and my wife didn’t even attempt them. If you’re over 50 and not athletic, I’d forget this guest house.

The building has a lovely historic feel, and the owner was kind and helpful throughout. Our ensuite room was very clean, and the shared kitchen was handy for making something or just having tea or coffee. We had the lower room, nearer the street, but closing the windows kept the noise from getting loud. You’re very central, about a five-minute walk from the train station. I’d definitely recommend staying here.

I’ve stayed at Amsterdam Central Guest House many times over the years, and the location keeps bringing me back. My latest visit was New Year’s Eve 2022/23, and it was just right again. Gani, the host, is really friendly and helpful, and made sure everything went well. The room is warm and the bed is comfortable. It’s traditional Dutch style without anything fancy, which suits me perfectly.

I really enjoyed making my own breakfast with the food provided in the kitchen, which was a treat for me as a chef. The person running the place was friendly, responsive, and helpful, and we heard surprisingly little street noise in the lower room. This is a bed and breakfast in a historic building, not a modern hotel. Expect steep stairs, uneven floors, and doors and windows that stick. If you want a taste of everyday Amsterdam living, I can’t recommend this B&B enough. It’s in De Wallen.
