Hotel Cornelisz

For five nights I had the top floor single room, which felt cozy and was just the right size for me. The location’s excellent, with lots of things close by. Toward the end I got a bit itchy and noticed a few bites on my belly. If you’re sensitive, I’d suggest choosing another hotel.

The room looked promising at first, but I woke up after the first night covered in bites and welts. I figured mosquitoes might have got in through the cracked window. The next night I woke at 3am itching, found bedbugs crawling in the bed, and killed three: two small ones and one very large one. I wish we’d checked the Google reviews as well as booking.com before choosing this hotel. Staff apologized and offered another room, plus trash bags for our affected clothes, and said they’d refund the laundry costs. But I’m extremely itchy all over and allergic to the bites, so I’ve lost peace of mind both during the day and when trying to sleep. We checked out the next day and are waiting for a refund.

The room we’d booked wasn’t cleaned by the time we arrived, so we were put in a smaller room for the night and promised a refund for the room we’d reserved. It was more like a shelter under the roof, with doors and windows that barely closed. When we contacted Hotels.com, the hotel claimed we’d been given an upgrade. That’s what they call an upgrade from a superior room. Very unprofessional and not to be trusted.

Because the building was converted from a brownstone type of residence, the rooms are small, though I didn’t mind that. I heard some street noise, but the location is terrific, with many major museums within a 15 minute walk. My stay was very pleasant.
