When our flight was cancelled again, we booked extra nights while we waited to find out what would happen. Once we learned the flight was going ahead after all, the hotel gave us a refund out of compassion, even though they weren't obliged to. That kindness meant a lot during a stressful time, after repeated cancellations had left us stranded in Amsterdam. I have worked in hotels for over ten years and haven't seen customer service this good in a long time. The staff were consistently caring and attentive from the moment we arrived. They offered refreshments and help, and someone checked every evening to see if we needed anything. I felt looked after throughout. The historic building is beautiful, thoughtfully restored, and full of its original charm and detail. The room was comfortable, the spa lovely, and breakfast was among the best I've had for variety. The location is ideal, very central and extremely close to the train station. We'll definitely return, and I highly recommend it as a place to stay in Amsterdam.
The rooms are spacious, and the bathroom has a lovely bath and a big double sink with room for all the things you need. The food was amazing, beautifully presented as well as looking great. Everyone was so nice and happy to answer questions. They know their stuff and have a good sense of humor. The place itself is beautiful, and I'd definitely recommend a visit!
The pool, sauna, and jacuzzi made a great escape from the very cold Amsterdam weather, and the room was nice, though far too hot. The air conditioning wasn't working because the heaters were on. When I asked the front desk how to turn them off in our room, they said, "it takes time," but didn't explain what we could do. We had a mixed stay, with great amenities and poor service. We were there for three nights. After the first night, we asked housekeeping to tidy the room, then followed up twice, at 11am and 3pm. By 6pm it still hadn't been done. The front desk said the housekeeping staff had gone home and nothing could be done, which wasn't a major issue on its own. The next day, housekeeping cleaned but took the bottom half of my partner's pyjamas, apparently with the bedsheets. When we told the concierge and front desk, they said it couldn't have happened and there must have been a mistake. They told us to email the manager. We did, and were directed to search the hotel's lost and found website. We hadn't lost the item, their team had taken it. Their small compensation offer didn't cover even 20% of its value.
The location is excellent, right by the train station and close to many sights. The hotel is clean, with spacious rooms and an impressive building. The corridors felt like a maze until a staff member gave us a useful tip, then it became easy to find our room. Breakfast had lots of choices and was perfect to start the day. There were free drinks in the minibar, though nobody told us when we arrived. It's in the red light district, but you can easily avoid that area. It's a nice option, although quite pricey. If I'd realized it was right in the Red light district, I'm not sure I'd have chosen it.
We had four wonderful nights at Grand Hotel Amrath, our first time staying there and visiting Amsterdam. I was unsure after seeing mixed reviews, but this turned out to be the most gorgeous hotel we've stayed in. I like to prepare before a trip, and I'm glad we booked it. The staff greeted us warmly and helped bring my wheelchair and luggage inside through the disabled entrance. They were supportive of my mobility aid and made check-in smooth. The room was beautiful, with a very high ceiling, and they'd left an anniversary card and a little treat, such a lovely touch. The bed was really comfortable, which matters because I live with chronic pain. The mini-fridge, tea, and coffee were stocked and replenished daily, and our room and bed were refreshed each day. A large wheelchair fit through the room door, with space to leave it folded by the entrance. The bathroom was fully accessible, the shower was easy for me to use and well stocked with essentials, and the pressure was lovely. We didn't use the bath, but it was wide and inviting. Finding the room was a little tricky at first, though easy once we got our bearings. Breakfast was included and well worth it. There were warm dishes, continental options, pastries, fresh fruit, lots of juices, tea and coffee, and even sparkling wine for a celebration. We ate there every morning. The breakfast staff were friendly, offered choices from the egg menu, and were happy to chat while giving guests privacy when they wanted it. We also used the spa twice. The pool had room for three couples to swim at once, and we enjoyed the infrared sauna, the 70 degree sauna, and the steam room. We left feeling completely relaxed. The jacuzzi was out of service, which was a shame, but things happen, and the hotel's website said it was due to be repaired by mid December. On our last morning, staff stored our luggage and wheelchair while we took one last gentle stroll and tram ride around the city. When we came back, they helped us reach the taxi rank outside. We're very grateful to everyone at Grand Hotel Amrath for their support, hard work, and kindness. We'll return next year and recommend it to anyone looking for an exquisite yet affordable stay. Thank you for treating my disability as a normal part of the experience and supporting me so well. For other disabled guests, including those with wider wheelchairs, our stay was delightfully accessible and memorable thanks to the staff.
