The grounds are the best part of Landgoed Hotel-Restaurant Groot Warnsborn: a beautiful forest setting, tidy gardens, and lots of paths to walk. That charm made a strong first impression, but the stay didn't feel up to four-star standards, and we wouldn't return or recommend it. We found the overall experience average at best, more like a three-star property. At arrival, the receptionist said she was on a break and would check whether our room was ready once she'd finished. We were told to wait outside, which wasn't an acceptable welcome for a hotel in this category. The interior also felt dated and inconsistent, with furniture that seemed randomly chosen instead of part of a coherent or recently renovated design. Our junior suite was bright and pleasant, but its layout and furnishings were poorly thought out. The large wooden frame around the bed was impractical and uncomfortable, and we kept hitting our legs on it. There were few amenities: no complimentary bottled water, vanity kit, or conditioner, just one soap and shampoo. The towels were thin, and the entrance opened directly into the bathroom area, an odd layout. The so-called “royal breakfast” was a letdown, with a limited selection, machine coffee, and orange juice from a carton. Scrambled eggs were placed with pork and bacon, while cheese was stored beside salmon. The smells made much of the food unappealing for vegetarians. There were no fresh vegetables like tomatoes or cucumbers, and the breakfast seemed more like a basic three-star offering than anything “royal.”

The room felt a little small for the price, but the surrounding area is beautiful. Breakfast was a fantastic spread, with enough there to make mimosas, too.

My son and daughter in law got married here last Thursday, and the wonderful staff helped make the wedding and our stay memorable. We were there for two nights, mostly focused on the festivities, though it seemed like lots of people were hiking nearby. The setting is a beautiful mix of forest and manicured gardens. We stayed in the coach house rooms. My room had plenty of space, a little living room, fireplace, refrigerator, and private outdoor terrace. The bathroom had a shower and a big, gorgeous bathtub. The beds were lovely, with heavy, smooth sheets and fluffy pillows. All the food was delicious, both in the hotel dining room and at the wedding. The staff were extremely kind and friendly, and did their best to make us comfortable. They also prepared a delicious vegetarian rehearsal dinner, explained the food and wine choices, and served several wines. I can't say enough about how kind the staff were, how lovely the surroundings are, or how good the food was.

We had a room in the loft, and it was very quiet. There's a nice terrace at the front for eating when the weather's good. The grounds are lovely, the welcome was very friendly, and the food was very good. We tried bar snacks, breakfast, and lunch.

We loved our first night so much that we stopped here again on our way back from Denmark. We arrived by chance during the Christmas period, while on a long drive, and the decorations inside and outside the hotel were amazing. Our first night was in a suite, Room 14, which is huge and one I'd definitely recommend. The hotel is family owned, and we got to talk with the owners. They're a very kind family who make guests feel welcome. The property sits in the middle of a massive area of trees and bushes, and there's a large covered, heated terrace where you can sit, smoke a cigar, and order food. The staff included us in a private Christmas gathering and even gave us a gift. The food is great, and the place has a lot of history: Anne Frank stayed at the hotel, though the whole building burned during the war after German soldiers had a big party and managed to set it on fire. If you want somewhere peaceful, with lovely people and an honest private business, and you enjoy smoking a pipe or cigar as I do, you should visit. I'll come back, probably in summer to see how different it looks.
