Fletcher Hotel Gilde

Had a romantic night at the Fletcher Hotel. The reception staff were very respectful, and the room was spotlessly clean.

The location is fantastic and the staff are trying hard, but it feels like they're swimming against the tide. The place comes across as tired and a bit sad, though you could call it nostalgic. We had to ask for a fan because the room was too hot, and for a kettle just to make tea. Smokers were allowed to gather outside the breakfast room, the scrambled eggs were salted to the cook's taste, and a boiled egg was green. We kept returning to the brand after a good stay at Fletcher Paterswolde, but this hotel feels lukewarm and doesn't seem to be putting much effort into becoming a preferred place to stay. We won't be back, and Fletcher won't be our first choice now.

Deventer is lovely, with welcoming people, good food and beautiful views over the IJssel. The hotel is right in the centre, with the train station and 24-hour parking garages close by. I paid 42 euro for a double room with a balcony through an auction site, so it was excellent value. Everything was clean, the beds were comfortable, and there was even a bathtub. Check-in took some effort because the key card failed twice, but they sorted it quickly. A tea or coffee machine in the room would have been nice, though we could get free hot drinks in the breakfast room day and night, so I can't complain.

The old town is right nearby, and breakfast was great. The staff were friendly and helpful. I'd like to come back.
