Simplon Hostel

Being right beside the venue was the best part. I got to spend time with the artists playing that night, and I’m already planning to come back next year. Some guests were noisy, though the neighborhood itself was quiet. The room had a bit of a smell, but with so many people and dirty socks around, I guess that happens.

The apartment was lovely, and I’d happily stay again whenever I’m in Groningen. We were there with friends from 2 February until 8 February. What really stood out was the staff: everyone was warm and ready to help. I asked one of the guys, who I think they called Eus, for several things in quick succession, and he helped with every one of them with a big smile.

There are lots of good places to eat in the commercial neighborhood, and the breakfast buffet is pretty good for 9 euros. Reception staff speak good English, and there’s a pleasant courtyard just outside. The interior is a bit run down, with little common space and very limited shower and toilet facilities. It’s a fair walk to the centrum, too. Not a terrible place to stay, but not especially good either. It may suit students; otherwise, expect a worse-than-average experience.

They even arranged a fully vegan breakfast for our group when we asked, and it was nice. We were 20 people staying at Simplon for a weekend, and it worked out great. The staff were friendly and easy to like, and the small lounge and breakfast space felt really cozy. It’s a hostel, so nothing fancy, but we had a blast.
