Van der Valk Hotel Heerlen

The location is a real plus, between Maastricht and Aachen, with beautiful surroundings and plenty of nature. Still, I didn’t enjoy my stay and wouldn’t come back. At 300 euros a night, it was very poor value. The room wasn’t maintained or cleaned properly, and didn’t meet what I’d expect for that price. I’d rate this closer to a three-star hotel. The receptionist wasn’t friendly either. There were no slippers or bathrobe in the room, and although the hotel has a pool, you have to pay extra for both. That seems insane for a four-star hotel.

We had brunch from the buffet, with lots of different dishes and fresh wok food fried to order. There were salads, soups, burgers, steak, chips, and vegetarian choices too. Dessert included cakes, fresh fruit, a chocolate fountain, ice cream, a cheese board, plus coffee and tea.

We went for a family dinner with a group of 12 and were pleasantly surprised. The food was top notch, and the service was good too. I’d recommend trying the seasonal specials when they’re available.

It was a nightmarish stay. The room smelled strongly of urine as soon as we walked in. There was limescale all over the shower, and stains covered the carpet, mattress, walls, and curtains. Under the bed we found dead insects surrounded by white powder, as well as something that looked like rat droppings. The manager said she thought the room was spotless and claimed the thing under the bed was a snail. When she couldn’t think of another excuse, she said it was just a small piece of leather from clothing, but wouldn’t touch it to prove it.
