Fitz-Roy Urban Hotel Bar and Garden

The layout was strange despite all the space: a hot tub in the middle, a shower visible from the entrance, and nowhere comfortable to sit, like a couch area. The outside space had no furniture and felt like a prison yard. Then in the morning there was no hot water at all. Seriously. After an hour, the explanation was that there’d been electricity problems overnight. They later offered 15% off a future visit, which didn’t help. The whole experience left me underwhelmed.

The staff member who greeted us was incredibly friendly and set such a nice tone. I didn’t catch his name, but he took good care of my mum and me. The food was lovely too. Thanks so much, we’d love to come back sometime.

We didn’t stay at the hotel, but had a meal there. The food tasted good and the service was good, though the menu is quite limited. It’s a lovely spot with a backyard for a quiet summer lunch. If you’re after somewhere lively to grab a bite, this probably isn’t your place. A tip for business travellers: staff said a food hall would soon open across the road, which sounded promising.

The bed was the best part of an otherwise average room, though the pillows were terrible. We were in room 303 and could hear everything from room 304 because the sound insulation between rooms was so poor, which ruined our sleep. At €180 per night for a standard room without breakfast, we expected much more. Check-in felt impersonal, with hardly any interaction. The reception is tucked away at the back by the restaurant, and the entrance gave us little sense of welcome or warmth. I understand COVID-19 measures made things harder, but it still felt unwelcoming. At checkout we shared our disappointment, and they listened carefully and responded sincerely. They waived the €21 parking fee as compensation, which we appreciated, but we still left very disappointed.
