Hotel Roermond Next Door

Our room included breakfast, which was good quality: freshly squeezed orange juice, great coffee and a nice spread. Good value overall. One first impression that could improve is check-in, since a friendly front desk is always appreciated. There's a bit of a setup to understand: Roermond Brasserie and Roermond Next Door are two hotels under the same management. You park and check in at Brasserie, then go across the road to Next Door. Strange, right? 😁 I guess it depends on how much you're willing to pay. Google Maps isn't very accurate either. If you're driving, set Roermond train station as the destination, turn right at the traffic lights as you come out of the tunnel, then immediately right again. It's right beside the station.

The staff were friendly, and it was handy that breakfast was included in the price. It was simple but decent. The location was convenient and the rooms a decent size, but the walls are thin, so hallway conversations a few metres away carry into the room. The room wasn't very clean: there were strands of hair on the chair and things that hadn't been vacuumed. The bedsheets had brown stains that looked like old blood, which I didn't find hygienic.

If you're arriving by train, the hotel is right across from the station. It's also about a 10 minute walk from the outlet, with several restaurants and bars beside it. By car, things are less obvious: the hotel is in the pedestrian area and free parking is behind the railway station, but staff will explain how to get there. The staff were nice and breakfast was average. The room was clean but had no view, so it wasn't a nice place to sit, and there was no fridge.

We arrived at 5pm with a reservation and were given a room that hadn't been cleaned after the previous guests. There were used towels on the floor, messy beds and rubbish left behind. We called and were told to cross the street to reception to sort it out, then had to explain several times how dirty it was. The manager offered a free drink, but said we'd have to wait 2 hours for the room to be cleaned. We had young kids after a long drive, so asked for another room. At first we were told the hotel was full. When we said Booking.com showed rooms and that we'd accept being split between two rooms, the manager said we should have checked in earlier. She then said rooms were available but refused to move us. The room wasn't cleaned until 7pm, and somehow we were blamed for not arriving earlier, even though check-in starts at 2pm. The housekeeping woman was apologetic and looked overworked. We understand mistakes happen, but the manager was arrogant, rude and unapologetic. It felt like dealing with a budget hotel, not a 3-4 star place. The WiFi was bad too. We won't stay again. It's a shame because the location is nice, but the manager's attitude ruined it. I'm also concerned that she didn't seem to understand the seriousness of Covid, sending guests to an unclean room and refusing to switch us even when rooms were available. I have serious doubts about management's attitude toward Covid.
