Jotunheimen Fjellstue

This traditional mountain hotel sits in a beautiful spot, with potential as a starting point for hikes in Jotunheimen and Breheimen. The beds were good, and the rooms had a shower/WC. There’s a lounge and basic bar service, but no sauna. Breakfast was standard and included. The optional 3-course dinner only starts at 20:00, and the service was slow. I liked the hotel, but didn’t enjoy the dinner.

A comfortable bed, great food and a central base for exploring Jotunheimen. The hotel felt very relaxed and welcoming, with just the right amount of mountain hospitality and friendliness. It was nice to talk over the day’s adventures with a cold beer.

We took some beautiful pictures outside, but the visit itself felt awkward. In Norway, it’s unusual for us to feel lost. We saw welcome signs and hoped to get a bite of lunch, but they only had cake. The welcoming feeling seemed to stop at the signs near the motorway. Inside, they weren’t prepared for us, and it felt like we were more than they could handle at that moment, so there was no food.

Dinner stood out most: the Swedish chef made a meal with local ingredients, including farm produce, that was unmatched anywhere else in the mountain area. Vegetarians should book ahead, and the dinner and wine package is well worth reserving. The staff were friendly, the rooms reasonable, and the location handy for mountain hikes. Breakfast was nice, and it never felt too crowded.
