We only stopped for lunch during a bus excursion from Skjolden, but had a lovely meal. It’s an interesting restaurant with good facilities near the Saga Column.

The meals were wonderful, the hiking incredible, and the staff friendly. I’d book again. Take time to look around this historic lodge, it could be a museum, there’s so much to see.

We only dropped in for a warm drink and to use the restroom, but next time we’re coming to stay. It feels like a fairytale hotel, and even on the short walk in to get a drink I noticed so many amazing details!

The rooms need a lot of work, and that’s what weighs most heavily for me. Our furniture was old and in poor shape, the floor wasn’t very clean, and the room cleaning left dust in the cupboards. There were no toilet brushes, and we found dead flies. You can hear people walking and talking in the corridors, and the room was poorly insulated, with no double glazing. Luckily, the heating helped. The bathroom had an unpleasant smell, and the electrical fittings near the bath weren’t protected, which made me question safety. Like elsewhere in Norway, the curtains let in daylight, and there were very few sockets. The exterior is beautiful, and the building has real charm. The shared building for hotel guests is huge, spacious and pleasant, and dinner was very good. If they made major improvements to the rooms, I’d probably rate the hotel a 5. But I judge a hotel mainly by its rooms, so I can’t rate it higher at the moment. I wouldn’t recommend staying here, apart from the location, setting and the pleasant shared building.

There’s history everywhere in this family-run hotel from the 1600s, with portraits and ornaments around every corner. It has what hikers need: a room by the river, a cozy fireplace bar and a great dinner. Breakfast is top-class, with bags provided so you can pack a sandwich for your hike. The location beside a glacier water river is wonderful, with fantastic panoramic views over the mountain valley.
