We ended up here by chance while driving from Kristiansand to Bergen and looking for somewhere to sleep. The photos of the staff in old maid outfits seemed a little strange, but the other hotels nearby looked boring and ugly, so we decided to try it. It had a really quaint, old-fashioned feel. A Danish man working there told us sweet ghost stories and, in Norwegian, explained how the houses became a hotel. It was probably the most authentic guest house I’ve stayed in. There’s nothing luxurious about it, but we had a lovely romantic evening in. A little river and bridge nearby make for a nice walk, and the sunset we saw there was beautiful.

The food is all home cooked, and they take food allergies seriously. The staff are so friendly and give great service. This place has a fascinating history, with beautiful old design that stays true to the hotel’s age. I’d really recommend stopping in for a coffee or a meal.

The interior is original, right down to the old newspapers, and the food is good. It’s a fascinating, one-of-a-kind hotel that takes you back in time. If you want a different sort of stay, drop in for coffee or a meal in this late-1800s setting. It’s worth a visit.

The food here is top-notch, and in summer I’d recommend the Friday night all-you-can-eat “Wishing grill,” where you grill your own food out back. This is a hotel that takes you about a hundred years back in time, filled with original antiques and staff generally dressed in period clothing. Don’t expect modern conveniences if those are important to you.

If a comfortable night’s sleep is all you’re after, this probably isn’t the place. At Paulsens Hotel, the point is to get a sense of what staying in a hotel might have been like a hundred years ago. The rooms are small and the walls are thin, but that’s part of the experience. The staff had taken over the business just three days before my stay, and they were very friendly. I wish them all the best with the hotel.
