Hornsjø Høyfjellshotell

The best parts are outside: Hornsjø lake is lovely for a swim, the hotel can lend canoes, and there are well-marked hiking routes plus popular biking trails. Sheep graze nearby, along with a traditional Norwegian summer farm with cattle. The hotel has a great view, but mobile reception and Wi-Fi were both very poor. Staff said they had applied to the local council and phone companies for better coverage, so that might improve. Inside, the double room was clean and pleasant, though the mattresses were terrible and the windows dirty. Shared areas were tidy but not very clean, and the place felt run down. There weren't the advertised facilities: the pool was shut for renovation, and I couldn't find a play area for children indoors or out. Staff were mostly absent, even when we arrived, and we had to look around for someone to check us in. Dinner needs to be ordered a day ahead; there's no regular restaurant or bar as advertised. Breakfast is from 8-10, but go early, most of the food was gone by 9 and nothing was replenished after 8. It's about 19 km, or a 33-minute drive, from Øyer, with a 50 kr toll road to reach the hotel. Staff said there are more facilities in winter, when they usually get around 3 m of snow. With the surrounding scenery, that could be great for skiing. Still, I can't recommend the hotel.
