Amar Hotel

It felt almost like home, with hot running water, friendly staff, spacious rooms, and a lovely balcony breakfast area. The hotel wasn't full while we were there, so we could pretend our 'bungalow' was ours and enjoy being pampered. We only ate breakfast there, mostly toast with tea or coffee, and usually had lunch and dinner outside. Before bed, staff boiled milk for us and filled my hot water bottle. There are no room heaters, and nights were cold even though the days were sunny and pleasant. The beds had thick cotton-filled quilts. Floors aren't carpeted, and slippers were available on request or depending on stock. We bought our own at Kalimati chowk.

The garden is full of plants and flowers, and every turn around the hotel makes you wonder what different scene might be around the next corner. Sitting outside for breakfast feels uplifting for both body and soul. The staff are kind and accommodating, ready to answer questions, and the owner is curious and helpful too. There are some drawbacks: breakfast is a bit limited if you don't want bread or are vegetarian, the worn beds make it uncomfortable to sleep straight, and many facilities feel old rather than fresh. I decided recently to stop complaining, which may be one reason this place gets such a high rating. The twin room was reasonably priced at 25 USD a night. The staff were professional, friendly, and keen to help me plan my Nepal trip. They even arranged for a tour organizer to explain options for hiking the ABC or EBC treks. When I said I might go without a guide, he was still friendly, didn't pressure me, and let me keep his maps.

The rooms were spotless and neat, and the staff were supportive and hospitable. Prices seemed okay, and the town view was nice from this excellent location. The only downside was the food, which felt a bit expensive once VAT and taxes were added to the menu prices.
