For $1000 a night, I expected much better cleaning and upkeep. There was hair and feces on the toilet, toothbrush splatter on the sink and walls, and debris and hair on the carpet. After we complained, they cleaned some of it the next day, but stains, grime, and existing paint damage were still there, along with other cleaning and maintenance issues. The building is lovely and historic, and the setting is incredible, across from the botanical gardens, close to excellent restaurants and the city center. It’s a shame management is letting such a beautiful place down. I hope they improve, because until the cleaning and maintenance are done properly, it’s hard to recommend.

The historic building has a lovely feel, with an art museum, café, and nice shops around it. A great spot if you’re into art and history. The hotel was clean and comfortable too, and I’d happily come back.

Staying inside the Arts Centre made this feel special, with creative neighbours and free interactive exhibitions just steps away. The Observatory Hotel itself has lots of character, with all kinds of interesting nooks to explore. Staff were warm and attentive, and the complimentary tea and coffee available through the day added to the welcoming feel. I felt looked after and at home here. Highly recommend!

The “continental” breakfast worked out to about $40 AUD a day, but it was basically toast, some sweet and savoury pastries, and ham. There’s a great cafe right outside, so I’d skip it. We paid close to $3K AUD for six nights, and for that money there are better options, especially since the room was small. The hotel is nice, and the location and the site’s heritage are great. We enjoyed most of our stay, but it was just okay for the price. I’d have looked elsewhere or booked an Airbnb.

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the staff were really kind and accommodating. The Observatory is also a beautiful hotel, close to plenty to do in Christchurch, with the Botanic Garden and lots of fun restaurants and bars just steps away. Definitely recommend it!
