Of the eight places we stayed across the North and South Islands on our New Zealand honeymoon, Tongariro Lodge was our favourite. We only spent one night there while passing through, but our chalet was perfect. We had dinner at the lodge after arriving and breakfast before setting off the next morning, and both meals were very good. My husband’s steak was cooked perfectly, and my favourite part was the apple crisp for dessert.

It’s a beautiful, peaceful, idyllic place with a great view. Apart from the stairs, it would have been five stars for us. We’re elderly, and our villa was raised, so climbing those steps at 80 years old wasn’t suitable at all. Next time, we’d only stay in a ground floor villa.

The grounds are beautiful, and it’s such a quiet, lovely spot. Our accommodation was clean and comfortable, the staff were friendly and very helpful, and we had a delicious meal at the restaurant. There were a few problems in the room, though: several lights didn’t work and the lighting was poor overall. The oven was old and had no rangehood, there weren’t many power points, and almost all the interior doors wouldn’t shut properly.

They advertise the property as luxurious, but I found it comfortable rather than luxurious. The bed felt like sleeping on concrete. Restaurant service was pitiful on the first night: they forgot my dessert and everything was slow. The service was very poor again the second night, and we gave up on dessert rather than waste any more time.

We spent three nights in one of the villas and loved it. The setting by the river was beautiful and peaceful, and everything was spacious, comfortable, and spotless. The staff were friendly and went out of their way to make things easy and enjoyable. We ate at the on-site restaurant every night, and the food was incredible. Highly recommend the venison short ribs, salmon, and steak. Breakfast was faultless too. The whole place feels relaxed and welcoming while still being special. Can’t wait to come back, easily one of our favourite stays.
