Alcala Motel

The service was lovely, and the stay was pleasant for the price. It's a nice, inexpensive hotel, though the room was a bit worn out (10) and the shower was the weakest I've ever had.

I've stayed here a lot and always enjoy it. The rooms are good and the beds are comfy. Gary, the owner of Alcala, is a really nice fellow, a great man. 10/10.

We spent one night here on our way to Christchurch. The hotel was quiet despite being in a lively area, and the city centre was about a 10-minute walk away. There were halal restaurants all around, and the suites were spacious with all the everyday essentials.

The owners were friendly, but their staff may be letting them down. This is a cool motel that could be good with some work, but for us it wasn't worth the price. Within five minutes of arriving, I noticed stale cigarette smoke, a baby cockroach, and bird poo on the kitchen bench. I saw no more cockroaches while searching, but at bedtime and again in the morning I spotted an adult one going from the oven to behind the microwave. The bathroom was mouldy, and the shower had low pressure and sat above a raised shub bath, so it was very low. The old-fashioned steps up to the mezzanine have steep, alternating left and right foot cutouts. Interesting, but surely not to code anymore. The in-room book said painting was planned, but this place needs more than paint.
