Majestic Mansions - Apartments at St Clair

This cosy apartment has everything you need and makes a good base for exploring. St Clair beach and restaurants are a two-minute walk away, the convenience store is under ten minutes on foot, and the bus to Dunedin stops just a minute away. It’s also an easy drive to Otaga peninsula. Free laundry on site is a bonus. There’s no reception desk, so text or call the property manager with your arrival time. They need to meet you and provide the door access codes.

We had a beautiful view from our top-floor room, and the sound of crashing waves was just what we wanted. The rooms are quaint and nicely decorated, in a charming renovated heritage building. Its location is excellent, across from the promenade and a short walk from the beach and salt pool. Several restaurants are very close, and they were all busy when we visited. There are some old-building drawbacks: no elevator or central heating, and no attendant or manager on site, which made things feel impersonal. The garages under the front of the building are a tight squeeze for a mid-to-large car, though street parking is available. Our suite/apartment had a small kitchen with a fridge, microwave, and tea and coffee facilities. The bathroom worked, but it’s a wet room with a shower curtain, so the whole floor gets wet and needs squeegeeing after each use. We had to move a small set of movable shelves over by the basin to make room for toiletries.

The beach is right outside, and there are heaps of cafes and restaurants nearby. Our apartment had its own parking, a separate bedroom, a well equipped kitchen, bathroom, living room, and balcony. I loved the historic building and beautiful decor. It’s the best place I’ve stayed in Dunedin. I tried to book again, but it was full. There are only a few apartments, so book early. Love it!

Classy, clean, and comfortable, with a very old-school feel. Even the light switches and window fittings have that anachronistically vintage look. Lauren, the owner or manager, has travelled a lot and was interesting to talk with. The place is right beside the beach, and some rooms look out at surfers trying to catch waves below.
