The Duke Hostel

I’ve stayed here twice, and it’s been better each time. The owners are passionate about the property, and you can see the care they put into it. There’s a major upgrade every year. It’s a true Kiwi hostel, with heaps of parking, and it’s motorcycle friendly too. One of the best places I’ve stayed. These guys are one of a kind, and you’ll never be disappointed here.

The Duke Hostel is right in the town centre and stands out with its bright yellow walls. We stayed in the recently renovated double room with ensuite, which was cozy and comfortable. The kitchen was very well equipped, the dining room was big, and there were laundry facilities. The staff were super friendly and welcoming. We highly recommend this place.

My partner is from Australia and had never seen a coal fire before, so he really enjoyed stoking the fire in the lounge room. We had a very clean and comfortable double room with ensuite, and the kitchen and dining areas had everything you could want. I’d recommend staying here and will be back next time I’m in Greymouth. I stayed there for maybe two years and had mixed experiences. The owner was very welcoming and took great pride in the business, but his son was, and will be, its downfall. He had no social skills, and smoked weed downstairs in the shed beside the kitchen. The smell drifted into the kitchen and the rooms upstairs. That’s bad for business, but while I was staying there I didn’t say anything because I was afraid they’d kick me out, simply because they showed so little respect for customers.
