I can still picture the waves at night and that incredible view over Anaura Bay. Judy was such a great host when I stayed here with my aunt and uncle back in 2003. I can’t believe she’s still here, and I still haven’t managed to make it back. I’d highly recommend staying here, you won’t be disappointed. Will from Auckland.

Judy was lovely, and breakfast was fantastic. The place is off the grid, with a beautiful sunrise, though the house is a lot for one person to look after. Some features are still being renovated after the storm. Also, check Google before driving there, since car navigation can take you to the wrong place. The driveway gets steep at the end, so it’s not suitable for low vehicles.

The balcony view was fantastic, and falling asleep to the sound of the waves was hard to beat. My unit above the main house was spacious and comfortable, with everything I needed. Judy was friendly and kind, and breakfast came with fresh-squeezed orange juice, French press coffee, toast and an omelette. It’s more of a homestay or B&B than a hotel, about 10 km off the main road on a bay with a holiday park and a Maori village. I only stayed briefly, arriving later in the afternoon and leaving early the next morning, but had a great time and would recommend it. There aren’t many hotels on the East Cape in general, so this is probably the best choice in the area.

Judy kept us entertained with all her fascinating stories, and the breakfast was outstanding. We felt very spoiled and lucky to stay in such an amazing place. From the Kawakawa suite balcony, the views were spectacular, and the bed was super comfortable. The sunrise at 6.45am in late September was worth getting up for. Thank you, Judy. Hopefully we can come back one day.

Judy was friendly, helpful and easy to chat with, and she has a good sense of humour. We had a lovely, relaxing night in the self-contained cottage. It was spacious, comfortable and homely, with a beautiful view. The beach is an easy walk away, and the bush and bird life added to the peaceful feel.
