Hokitika Pioneer Hotel

The restaurant was a real highlight, with amazing food at very reasonable prices and a nice discount for hotel guests. Our twin room was roomier than I expected, the staff were friendly, and it was an easy walk into town. Some noise does travel through the thin walls in this older building, especially doors and conversations early in the morning. The hotel has already taken steps to address it, and guests being a little considerate would help too. There are lots of good things about staying here. I'd happily come back and still recommend it.

The steak on my second night was incredible: rib eye with roasted vegetables, mash, peas and a sauce of my choice, all cooked perfectly. I was almost sorry I hadn't ordered steak the night before, when I had garlic bread and shrimp cocktail instead. Those were great too. The bar feels like the local place to be and has a good range of drinks. Staff and locals were welcoming, and town and the beach are just a short walk away. The place looks unassuming, but I really enjoyed staying here. Prices for the room, food and drinks were reasonable, and diners who stay there get a discount on food.

A relaxed, clean hostel with everything I needed, and it was reasonably priced. Michelle is super nice, and downtown Hokitita is about a five minute walk away. If noise bothers you, there's an occasional slow train you can hear, though it isn't very loud. It didn't bother me. The constant cicada 'singing' annoyed me much more :)

We didn't stay here, but came in as tourists and felt really welcome. The food was affordable and tasted home cooked, and the staff went above and beyond. The woman with glasses who served us was lovely and even remembered us when we returned.
