Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses

Being able to rent bikes right at the lodge made it easy to explore the surrounding area at our own pace. The staff were warm and attentive, and their care never felt intrusive. Dining was a highlight, with outstanding seasonal food that made every meal feel like part of the stay. The spacious rooms are thoughtfully designed, very comfortable, and give you a real sense of place and privacy. After time outdoors, the sauna and pool were a lovely way to unwind, with views that made us lose track of time. The peaceful landscape felt immersive from the moment we arrived, with deer wandering freely around the property. Waking up among the greenery and wildlife made us feel connected to New Zealand. Hapuku Lodge & Tree Houses is a rare place where nature, comfort, and hospitality come together effortlessly. It stayed with us long after we left.

We were lucky to see the Aurora Australis while stargazing. In such a quiet, remote setting, it felt surreal and made an already special stay even more memorable. Our tree house was beautifully designed and comfortable, with incredible views from among the trees. It felt peaceful, private, and close to nature. Hapuku Lodge + Tree Houses is a place we’ll always remember, and we’d absolutely return.

We stayed at the Hapuku Lodge for three nights in February 2026 and could easily have added another day or two. The scenery is breathtaking, and the whole place feels tranquil. The chef and team made dining a wonderful experience, and the staff were outstanding, friendly, efficient, and accommodating. I highly recommend this lodge. You won’t regret it.

The staff were the standout for us, incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and accommodating. They kept looking for ways to improve our stay, add an amenity, or arrange a booking. Rachel’s free stargazing tour was especially memorable. She took astrophotos and sent them to us later, and they were museum quality. We’ll absolutely return, drawn back to Kaikōura’s many attractions and this destination resort. The setting is spectacular, with Big Sur-like mountain views on one side of the room and the ocean on the other. The green, natural grounds are full of birdsong, with sheep and deer grazing in the fields. Resort trails lead down to the ocean. Facilities include a 104-degree stone hot tub, a 94-degree lap pool, a sauna, and a spa. Breakfast and dinner were included, both top quality. The chefs were fantastic, even cooking two lobsters we’d bought on the drive down from Blenheim as a dish to add to dinner. Our room was modern and elegant, with an automatic bidet toilet, automated shades, internet TV, fast WiFi, a fireplace, a balcony, and other amenities.
