We were grateful for the dinner, breakfast, and hot pool offered after a gas leak meant the HOH Matamata property was unavailable the day before our trip. We’d booked it to celebrate our first anniversary, but were instead offered a cabin in Matamata, about 4-5 hours farther than Wairarapa. With nothing else planned at short notice, we accepted. The hosts apologized and offered to cover our petrol as well. We never asked for that reimbursement, but it was offered. Since returning, I’ve tried several times to contact them by text and email about the petrol, and have been completely ignored.

The owners threatened to kick everyone out unless my review was removed, even though I’d posted it on arrival. We’d booked all the advertised accommodation well ahead for a wedding, then arrived to find both Chalets gone. That couldn’t have happened overnight, yet the owners still asked for payment in advance and gave us no warning. There was no accountability or refund, and they even asked us to post photos on Instagram. The service was horrific, the whole thing felt like a rip off, and I’d never recommend booking here. Worst experience I’ve had.

The house had lots of thoughtful touches, and everything was spotless and tidy. I had a private room with a full bathroom and an extra double bed. It was really comfortable, and the kitchen was open plan. The service was excellent.
