I don't get all the five-star reviews. The owners or management were nowhere to be seen, and the place seemed to be run by some pretentious European kids in their twenties. They were unprofessional and catty, and I could tell they weren't happy with the arrangement they'd got into. Communication was poor. Bikes cost extra to hire, despite some reviews suggesting they're free, and the location is quite inconvenient when the main bridge is out. Breakfast is a joke, and the dorm rooms are small with hardly any storage. Nelson has plenty of good hostels, so I'd stay somewhere else. The one plus was the old guitar, which had a nice tone and sustain and was fun to play while having some local brews. It's only useful if you happen to end up here by accident.

The four bed female dorm was comfortable for my two nights, and having a quiet, contained place with a wood fire in the main Lodge and free breakfast bread was nice. It’s an easy walk to the i-SITE, grocery store and main strip. I didn’t really get the family-run feel while I was there. Backpackers were managing the hostel at the time, and there could’ve been more guest interaction to fit the branding. The toilets and kitchen could’ve been cleaner too.

The owner was especially dedicated and helpful, and the rooms were clean with nice decor. There’s a kitchen, washer and dryer, plus a living room to relax in. Towels and breakfast are included. It’s about a 15 minute walk to Nelson city centre.

It’s a small, cosy place, so it doesn’t have the crowds and constant bustle of a big backpacker hostel. Our room was good and the prices were reasonable. We only stayed briefly, but I’d recommend it if you want somewhere calm.

The space was really narrow, and the ceiling was very close to the top bunk. I stayed just one night in late June, and someone had taken my duvet, leaving me with only a wool blanket. It was so cold I was nearly frozen. I called Laura at 11pm, but she said there was nothing she could do.
