The Garden Room was spacious and thoughtfully designed, with a seating area and everything we needed, including coffee, tea and chocolate. The bathroom had lovely soft, large towels, luxury products and a waterfall shower. Even when we got back late, James still welcomed us. The breakfast was amazing: homemade almond croissants, fresh fruit, yoghurt, honey from their own hives and plenty more, followed by a cooked breakfast and a delicious flat white. There are only five rooms, so the place feels much more like a home than a hotel. James and James provide all the service, including the homemade breakfast and dinner, if you’re lucky with the timing, which is available four days a week. The house, art and furniture all have stories behind them, and they shared those with real enthusiasm during the welcome, along with delicious canapés and cocktails. I only had time for one cocktail. It’s a boutique stay with an unbelievable amount of attention to detail. Amazing!

The rooms were clean and comfortable, and the lodge has the charming historic feel you’d hope for. The owners, James and James, made the experience a real letdown. We arrived excited but were greeted with frowns. They came across as unwelcoming and sometimes made us uncomfortable. Even simple requests seemed to irritate them, and we felt like an inconvenience rather than guests they wanted to look after. It’s a shame, because with friendlier owners or staff this could be a wonderful place to stay. It gave us the impression they may not want to be in hospitality anymore.

The service was poor, and my family and I left feeling unhappy and disrespected. The two men running the place were rude throughout our stay, with smirky comments and an attitude that made us feel uncomfortable. After breakfast, one told me, “you are going to need a good cardiologist, I know of a good one for you”. They also had a creepy vibe, and when we struggled with our luggage on the stairs, they didn’t offer to help carry it. I wouldn’t recommend staying at this lodge.

James and James have poured themselves into 130 years old Pen-y-Bryn Lodge. I’ve never experienced hospitality this good anywhere in the world. It’s hard to put into a few words how much I enjoyed the stay and how much I learnt from them. This place will always be the shining treasure of my journey.

The homemade jams at breakfast and the furniture are just a couple of examples of how much care has gone into every detail here. This historic property has real character, with a small collection of beautifully decorated rooms. You can feel the owners’ labour of love in the place. A charming stay with plenty of history and elegance.
