There’s plenty of green space, a one-legged duck, and a herd of goats up on the mountain. The site itself is pretty, and the train line mentioned in the description didn’t bother us much. It seems to carry mainly freight during the day. Cafes, restaurants and pubs are within walking distance, as is the town. The location is especially convenient if you’re taking the Picton to Wellington ferry. Facilities are clean and good, though basic, and the site feels a little dated. Wifi requires a subscription.

We spent a night here before catching the ferry, and the campsite suited us fine. It’s a bit dated, but there’s also a big VHS collection, so if you fancy an old school James Bond film, you’re in the right place.
We gave Alexanders Camping Ground eight days’ notice that we wanted to cancel our reservation, which seemed like plenty of time for them to let someone else take the spot. (A reservation holds a place, usually without payment upfront; a booking is confirmed with payment.) Anthony, the owner, claimed the website said cancellations needed 30 days’ notice. What it actually says is, “Bookings are not refundable.” We’ve camped at plenty of places and haven’t come across procedures like this before. Please read the other Google and Tripadvisor reviews about Alexanders Holiday Park before you decide.
The camp was quiet and the other residents were friendly. I stayed in a caravan on a powered site and, as a light sleeper, wasn’t woken by the trains. Picton and the ferries are easy to get to, and lots of campers were coming and going for early and late sailings. It definitely matches the “retro” sign, since the facilities are dated, though the bathrooms were freshly painted and clean, and the showers were free and hot. The kitchen equipment could use an update. Customer service was functional, but not especially helpful.
We had a tidy, clean cabin with an ensuite and a small kitchen, just right for the two of us. The host was accommodating, and I can’t see what the issues are. There were four trains overnight, but each was a brief interruption. If you don’t like that, this location probably isn’t for you. The campground wasn’t very busy, and although we didn’t need the facilities, there’s plenty there, including a swimming hole. A few sandflies around. We’d stay again.
