Newina Rotorua

Newina Rotorua was modern, clean and comfortable, and the heated pool was a highlight. I loved the heated bathroom tiles too, such a nice surprise. The kitchenette had everything we needed, and the room was spotless and cozy. It's well placed for food, groceries and local attractions, with the city less than 10 minutes away. There was a little outside noise from nearby roadworks, but it was minimal and didn't interrupt our stay. We'd gladly return.

The reception staff were professional and helpful, and Mitai Village and other popular Rotorua attractions are conveniently close. Our renovated double room was upstairs, spacious, modern and very clean, with high-quality bathroom amenities. We'd book again, definitely recommended.

I was disappointed after choosing this place based on other people's reviews. The bathroom smelled unpleasant, and the room hadn't been cleaned at all. Even though the outside looked clean, there was an odor from the carpet and the interior didn't feel clean generally. I don't think I'd come back. I honestly wonder what other places some guests have stayed in to give this property such positive ratings.

We stayed for a week in the Corporate Twin Studio room, so we had time to get a proper feel for the property and Fairy Springs. The two Queen beds were very comfortable, and having a bath was another plus. We chose it partly because similar-price hotels in town usually offer only two single beds. The room was clean, though cleaning was only semi-regular at first. We had to tell reception once, and after that it was done regularly. Shirley, the proprietor, was responsive and helpful. It was also good that paying by Visa/MasterCard didn't bring a credit card surcharge. If you're comparing places, check whether they charge one, as it could add $30+ for a week. The big issue is the setting and noise. The surrounding area is industrial and commercial, beside a large shopping complex with a Woolworths supermarket, which was handy. Beyond junk food outlets, there wasn't much in the way of conveniences. There's no greenery or parks for an evening stroll, and walking into town takes a good 45 minutes along a dual carriageway. The property sits on the Thermal Explorer highway, busy with heavy trucks and cars much of the day and night. Road noise was constant. Earplugs helped us sleep, but couldn't block the vibration from heavy vehicles. Our upper-level room overlooked the outdoor spas serving the lower units. Guests are asked not to use them after a certain evening time, but one night a couple stayed in late with loud music, so we had to shut the windows. There's also no privacy for people using those lower spas. Once, I opened the window and saw two nude bathers below. They were embarrassed, and so was I. The property should put up privacy screens above the lower units to prevent awkward accidents. It wasn't a completely bad stay. Most guests seem to stay a night or two and then drive on, and I didn't get the sense this is geared to longer visits. The trucks and 'hoons' revving along the highway were a definite downside. If peace and quiet are what you want, staying closer to town might suit better, though it costs more.
