The green mold in the room can speak for itself in the pictures. I wouldn’t return to this “five star hotel.” The hand soap bottle was empty when we arrived on the first day. The next day, they left us with the same wet towels instead of replacing them, and after cleaning the room they turned off the fan. There was also a heated towel rack, but it didn’t work or heat.

Silver Fern ruined my vacation. The place calls itself suites with a spa, and every site I saw had positive reviews when I booked. What I found was filthy and badly kept. The sheets and towels were stained, the curtains felt dirty, the metal fixtures were rusted, and the furniture had dents and rips. The carpets smelled so grimy that even Rotorua’s sulfur air seemed pleasant by comparison. Paint was peeling off the ceiling above the bed. After one night I asked to leave and get a refund for the rest of my stay. They refused. The staff kept giving me what felt like lies: the peeling paint was supposedly no concern because they’d clean it if it fell on me while I slept. They claimed the carpet had been deep cleaned, maybe twenty years ago, and said the visible marks weren’t stains, just areas of a different color. They also said no one ever complains. That was when I filtered the reviews and found the same complaints. I can’t think of a budget hotel for the same or less money that wouldn’t be far better. Go somewhere else.

I booked a spa treatment and came away feeling completely rejuvenated. The spa services were awesome, and the in-room spa bath and excellent shower pressure were other highlights. My room was spotlessly clean, tidy and blissfully quiet. The decor isn’t ultra-modern, but everything felt fresh and well maintained, with excellent housekeeping. The receptionist was incredibly friendly from the moment I arrived, and gave me spot-on tips for geothermal attractions and places to eat. All the staff were attentive and caring throughout. I also enjoyed the complimentary DVDs and the free sweets at reception. The location is handy for the Polynesian Spa, Redwoods and eateries, while still feeling tucked away and peaceful. Silver Fern Rotorua Suites & Spa exceeded my expectations and offered great value. I’d definitely return.

The room was clean and modern, and the spa in it was great. The price was affordable, too. The receptionist was really friendly and the customer service was good. I’d definitely stay here again and recommend it to anyone looking for a nice place in Rotorua.

The staff were super nice, and the location between the lake and Redwoods was convenient. You can smell the geothermal area from here, so keep that in mind if sulfur bothers you. We paid about twice what we thought the room was worth on a busy holiday, around $600 a night including a fee for the third guest. The place needed a deep clean, especially the carpet and shower. New curtains, sheetrock repairs and paint would help too. One room had a broken pull-out sofa, so we were moved to another unit with a new sofa bed, but it was only about 1 1/2 to 2 inches thick. This boutique accommodation has seen better days.
