We spent the day taking in historic Russell and never got around to using the kitchenette downstairs. The sitting area was nice, though, and the extra bedroom wasn't needed. In ‘Treetops’, a cute apartment at Titore Lodge, the bed was super comfy, with an en-suite. We loved the treehouse feel, the views into the surrounding bush, and the native birds singing. Our host said there were kiwi nearby, and we heard their distinctive calls at night but didn't get to see one. Maybe we'll come back and try our luck. The bush tracks took us down to Russell, which we used to justify all the food we ate. You can also drive to the village in five minutes. Another track led to a little beach where my husband tried fishing from the rocks and, to his delight and my surprise, caught two kahawai. It looked like a gorgeous swimming spot, but the winter equinox put me off testing the water. A perfect place to get away, recharge, and relax.

We had everything we needed for a good holiday, including a comfortable bed and delicious food. The hosts went the extra mile when we had a small problem, and the sun shone the whole time. It's a wonderful place to stay, with a stunning setting and fantastic views over Russell.

Everyone was courteous and wonderful, and I loved every second of our weekend with family. It was the perfect way to get out of Auckland and reconnect with my hometown. I'll stay here again!

The garden suite was stylishly furnished, comfortable, and spacious enough for two, with an amazing view. Unfortunately, the strong damp smell would keep us from returning.

The views were good, but overall I wasn't impressed. The toilet was soiled, it wasn't clear which lodge was which, and the path to the bottom felt dangerous with no lights working. The dishwashing facilities were primitive, and the heat pump needs maintenance.
