Troutbeck Fishing Lodge

Jason took me on a one-day back country fishing trip, and it was the best day ever. I landed about 10 fish: a 7 lb. rainbow, a 6 lb. brown, three 5 lb. rainbows, and the rest were around 3 to 4 lb. Jason was awesome, even trudging across the river to free my line from a rock so I could get the 4 lb. brown. Hope I can come back someday!

My son and I came to fish, and TroutBeck Lodge gave us the holiday of a lifetime. The lodge is small, but the shared lounge, dining room, fish-cleaning area, and spot right on the Tauranga-Taupo River are superb. We’ve never had such personal service at a stay. Tracey looked after us like a mum, sorting out accommodation, meals, laundry, and food, beer and wine supplies. Jason is an accomplished fishing guide and helped us with the right information on where to fish and which flies to use. That made a huge difference. Between us we caught more than 30 trout, and without his advice we wouldn’t have caught a quarter of that. If we’d hired him as a guide, I’m sure we’d have done even better. Now we know the place and what Jason can do, we’re looking forward to coming back. We stayed in one of the small rooms, but the family room is worth mentioning: it has a master room and a second bedroom with two beds, plus a spa on the upstairs balcony overlooking the Tauranga-Taupo. Tracey’s cooking was superb, including local venison Jason brought from one of his hunting spots. He also offers guided local deer hunts and has an ATV to reach suitable areas. As a local trout guide, he knows back country spots where you can catch huge fish. Jason and Tracey are such caring hosts and went out of their way to make our stay wonderful. We’re going back. Jason’s a fantastic fishing guide, whether you’re experienced or just starting out. He can handle it all, and Tracey’s meals are awesome. Highly recommend.

We loved our stay. It’s a great spot to unwind with kids, with a safe compound and amazing dinners. There’s good fishing, lovely thermal baths nearby, and beautiful lake views just a short walk or drive from the accommodation.
