I was there for about four nights, and the place was very clean throughout, which matters a lot to me when I stay somewhere. The location was good, close to downtown and the river. Since it was December, the rooms felt hot, and I think they could use at least a small fan. It was also pretty noisy in the mornings with so many people around during the holiday period. The kitchen had everything needed, but I chose not to use it because it felt like too many people sharing a small space.

Braemar House felt welcoming and homely, even though it wasn’t flash, and the kitchen and bathroom were spotless. I loved my two-night stay in the cosy double cabin. The little things were there too, like a reading lamp, luggage rack, dress mirror, lots of power points and plenty of pillows. So many places I’ve stayed don’t have those. I’ll definitely be back.

On my first trip to Wanganui, I couldn’t have chosen a better place. The building has been beautifully restored, with period furniture and plenty of charm. The affordable rate included a surprising choice of eight teas and four coffees. Highly recommended.

For $120, I’d be better off booking an Airbnb. The queen deluxe room was tiny and didn’t have a private washroom. The kitchen was fine, but there were only four mugs, and it was hard to find a free shower. This felt way overpriced for a hostel, especially since it isn’t actually a bed and breakfast. I’d stay somewhere else.

After a rough couple of days riding the TA, I could do my laundry and clean my bike here. I really enjoyed the stay, and the house was cosy and charming with everything I needed.
