Bolton Hotel

Being able to walk easily into the CBD is a real plus, and the rooms are spacious, very clean, and handy for longer visits with their kitchens. We’ve stayed at The Bolton several times now and keep coming back for the warm, personal service you get at a smaller boutique hotel.

The big shower and roomy bathroom were a plus, and the hotel is comfortable and close to town and the harbour. The staff were friendly and helpful during my two night business stay. My room was fairly ordinary but practical, with plenty of space and a kitchenette with a small dishwasher, hob, and fridge. It also smelled of earlier cooking as soon as I walked in. One thing that really annoyed me was the bottled water. Those light blue plastic bottles in the fridge cost just under $8. The labels go on about sustainability and reusability, but that price feels like a stretch. You can drink tap water, they point out when you complain, but then why sell the bottles? I’ve said enough about the water. I would still recommend the hotel.

The Rita Angus connection and artwork were a lovely surprise, and the kitchenette gave us room for our Christmas leftovers and fancy ciders. Our room was pretty big, and the staff and hotel were great. We finally decided to stay after trying different city hotels over the years, even though this end of town is more business and government focused. The view was wonderful, so be sure to book a room with a guaranteed view.

After a long trip around NZ, the huge room, super-comfy bed, and nice linen were much appreciated. Staff were nice too. The place is decent, though a bit tired and due for a refresh. The amenities are average, and I wouldn’t bother with the gym. It seems to cater to a much older crowd.
