American Trade Hotel

We’ve stayed at boutique hotels around the world, and the service and atmosphere here are among the best we’ve had. The pool looks much better in person than in the photos, and there are fun little spots around the hotel, including a library and an on-site jazz bar. Our room was nice, room service sometimes came twice a day, and the food downstairs was great. Every staff member we met was friendly and accommodating. We’d absolutely come back, and it seems like one of the best options in Panama. There’s some noise, but you’re right in the middle of a lively town. A church across the street rings every 15 minutes from 6 AM to 10 PM, so if sleeping in matters to you, look elsewhere. For us, it was manageable and worth it. If that kind of setting isn’t your thing, Casco Viejo may not be the right area.

The location in the old town is great, and I liked that the hotel has some history. The building and interior are lovely, the room was nice, and breakfast was truly excellent. The pool is tiny and cold. The hotel seemed almost empty, but there was no upgrade or extra attention, which I wouldn’t expect, though I was still surprised. Even getting food took a while while staff chatted and there were practically no customers. The lobby and restaurant AC was freezing. Front desk staff weren’t especially welcoming, maybe they’re going for a cooler vibe. A little more friendliness and attention to detail could have made this a five-star stay.

You can walk almost anywhere from this spot in Casco Viejo, and the views are amazing. The noise is intense, though the hotel does provide earplugs. The restaurant served outstanding meals, and the service there was excellent. The staff were exceptional. The rooms feel dark, and while the decor is nice, the grout in the subway tiles needs a deep clean. Pipes rumbling from other rooms also disturbed our sleep. You really can’t beat the location.

It was so cold inside that we kept wishing we’d brought coats. We would’ve eaten at the restaurant and spent longer in the bar if we hadn’t been freezing. The windows got so covered in condensation that you couldn’t see outside. Everything else was wonderful, from the great staff to the rooms and breakfast. It’s a really beautiful building and hotel.
