We got in at 11:30 at night, the day after Peru's independence day, and every hotel was already booked. I'd made an online reservation, but somehow it hadn't gone through, even though it seemed to have been confirmed. The owner had no rooms left, so he fixed up a storage room beside the pool for my wife, daughter, mother-in-law and me to sleep in. I was very grateful we weren't left on the street. I'm still not sure whether the website, the owner, or I was at fault, but call to confirm after booking so you don't end up in the same spot. The owner was friendly and gave us useful tips about getting around and where to make bookings, though he doesn't arrange trips for guests. The room was cleaned and made up daily. It had no hot water, but that was fine in Tarapoto's heat, around 26C even in winter. Beds were comfortable, though the mattresses were fairly hard, as is common in Peruvian hotels. Don't expect luxury. Breakfast comes with the room, but it was hit or miss for me: fresh papaya juice, instant coffee, and a couple of sandwiches with ham, cheese, preserve, or a fried egg. There are two pools, cleaned each morning. I'd estimate the larger one is 120-140cm deep. It's near downtown, though the surrounding streets look shabby, with dirt roads and typical rural houses. That didn't bother me. I walked alone after dark and felt quite safe.
