The rooms are reasonable for this kind of place: cold air conditioning, decent WiFi, and an acceptable level of cleanliness and upkeep. The location is also decent, right on the edge of the CBD. Reception staff were reasonable and everyone was friendly enough. The food was below average, basic PNG standard rather than international, and well below Madang Lodge or Madang Resort, for example. Restaurant and bar staff were below average even by PNG standards. The menu didn’t match what was served: fragrant rice, for example, was just plain steamed rice. Music played relentlessly and unnecessarily at the outside bar. Even though I was the only person in the restaurant, one meal took 40 minutes, and I sat for 19 minutes before anyone asked whether I wanted to order a drink. This is a standard PNG hotel, not an international one. If PNG standards work for you, it’ll do fine.

We had to ask before basic things like soap, tea, and coffee were provided, including tea and sugar. There were water problems at the hotel, and the restaurant was missing most of the dishes on its menu.

It’s a quiet, spacious place, but most of the appliances aren’t working. We booked room #62, where the washing machine didn’t work at all. I called room service for help, and they said someone would come and sort it out right away, but nobody did. That was a big disappointment for a room costing K830.00 per night. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone.

Madang Star International’s new Asian lunch menu is amazing. The portions are hearty, the meal service is fast, and the prices are so good. It’s surprising that more Madang residents aren’t taking advantage of the offer. I’d recommend it to visitors and anyone after a decent-sized lunch that won’t dent the budget. Thanks to Roger and the team for a great experience. I’ll definitely be back soon.

For the price, it’s a decent spot: a basic air-conditioned room that’s clean and safe, with 27 TV channels. The area is nice, and attractions and town are within walking distance. The savings on accommodation leave room for good meals and a taxi when needed.
