The Flying Fish Hostel

The rooms are spacious, and it’s a big property with plenty of staff. I’m not really sure what people mean by “Boutique Hostel,” but this is one of those. It suited a few days in Dumaguete, with restaurants nearby and downtown only a quick ride away.

This is where I usually stay in Dumaguete. It’s easy to get to and only a few kilometers from the Dumaguete port. The WiFi is fast, the comfort rooms are clean, and they give you a 10% discount coupon for the restaurant next door.

It looks nice and is clean, but the water pressure is weak and disappears several times. That made it hard to shower when I wanted. There were mosquitoes, and the lighting was only mood lighting, with no overhead light. The plaster walls are thin enough that you can hear people talking and walking outside. I can’t recommend this stay to anyone.

The idea behind this hotel is unusual and interesting. Depending on how you see it, the look is either “brutalism chic” or a squatter-living experience. But worn-out fixtures and almost no shower pressure make it feel more like the latter. The bed is comfortable and the aircon is powerful, though, and the place is definitely interesting to look at.
